intermediate versons were produced, trialing all manner of engine and weapon
combinations. However, the next major variant to have significant impact could be
considered to be the MkXIV. This was the first production example to be fitted with the all-new Rolls
Royce Griffon 61 powerplant. Producing 2035 hp, this engine improved the
Spitfire's performance immeasurably about 30,000ft. High speed PR versions were produced, fitted with camera arrays for
high-speed, high altitude photo-reconnaissance work. 0.5 inch machine guns and
20mm cannons were combined in the R wing to provide devastating firepower. Cut
down fuselages or low-backs as they were known were introduced with tear-drop
canopies providing pilots with tremendous all around visibility. Very popular
with pilots, these versions of the Spitfire XIV could reach 43,000 feet and
deliver speeds in excess of 430MPH at that altitude. Combines with E wing
configuration, the later models of the MKXIV were very formidable combat
opponents indeed. A few examples were produced with contra-rotating propeller
units which resulted in eliminating the characteristic torque wing on takeoff.
The weight penalty penalty was too great however and the combination was not
adopted for service. In total, 20,334 Spitfires od all types were produced. Less than 1% remain
in existence today. For FS2004. |
